SHE was surrounded by the likes of Spider-Man, Superman and Thor but Carrie Anderson proved to be the real superhero of Culcheth.

The Stonyhurst Crescent resident won Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council's Community Superhero prize on Bank Holiday Monday.

Carrie's award was presented during comic book heroes themed Culcheth Community Day on the village green.

She was recognised for working on a voluntary basis with nearby schools, helping out groups which assist the disabled and running errands for elderly neighbours.

Cllr Chris Vobe said: "We were delighted to award Carrie the Community Superhero award – we know from working alongside her on local planning issues that she is a credit to our community.

"We had a number of strong applications but Carrie’s work really stood out as selfless and generous. She was a worthy winner."

The carnival atmosphere on Community Day also saw 'Dr Diablo' entertain crowds with his open air 'sideshow' with performance highlights ranging from fire-eating to lying on a bed of nails.

There was also a classic cars and vehicles display, pet show and 'The Great Culcheth Bake-Off” to raise funds for the Culcheth to Soweto Appeal and the Glazebury Play Area Group.

This year’s event also saw the first appearance of a ferris wheel nicknamed The Culcheth Eye and circus shows by Trumble the Clown.

Cllr Matt Smith added: "We were delighted that there was such enthusiasm from residents for our competitions.

"We were really pleased to see so many people engaging with the theme, and our entertainers once again drew enormous crowds for their open-air shows.

"We’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the day and once again made it such a huge success for the village."
