BIRCHWOOD supermarkets have been called upon to do more about trolleys being dumped in the town.

Trolleys from Asda, Aldi and Home Bargains are regularly abandoned in Redshank Lane, Linnet Grove and the back of Goldfinch Lane.

Angela Woodley, who sees them every time she walks her dog Molly, said: "It makes me mad to see them and I feel someone could be hurt by them.

"It's shocking. These trolleys are always there and it just winds me up when I have to move around them.

"Sometimes there are three or four trolleys hooked together and they very heavy to lift out of the way.

"You often see kids jumping on them which makes me frustrated and although I've lived in Birchwood for nine years it seems to be getting worse. Some people don't seem to care."

Cllr Russ Bowden, ward member for Birchwood and town councillor, added: "This has been going on for years. The trolleys are an eyesore when you see them chucked in hedges and dumped at the side of the road.

"As a town council, we've encouraged the supermarkets to do something about it. Dumping a trolley is just like dumping anything else.

"It detracts from the area we all live in and should take pride in."

A spokesman for Asda in Birchwood said the supermarket uses a system called 'Cart Tronics' to deter shoppers from stealing trolleys.

This is said to lock the wheels of the trolleys when they go beyond the boundary of the store.

The spokesman also said Asda workers patrol the town to retrieve stray trolleys.

She added: “The majority of our customers do use trolleys appropriately, but we'd plead once again with the small minority of people who take them off site and abandon them to stop doing so, and ask anyone else that sees one abandoned to give us a call so that we can collect it.”

Aldi and Home Bargains had not commented as the Guardian went to press.
