RESIDENTS are being reminded of Stockton Heath's Purple Flag achievements, which will 'always fly in the village's heart', every time they enter the area.

After a meeting last September it was confirmed Stockton Heath Purple Flag Association (SHPFA) would be disbanded, with responsibilities and any remaining assets to be handed over to the parish council.

Warrington Borough Council (WBC) said it was unable to continue 'sparing resources' and Cheshire Police felt objectives had been 'achieved'.

The village was the first in the UK to receive the award in 2011following recognition for its 'standards of excellence' in managing the evening economy and catering for the community.

It held the honour until last year and although the group has dissolved, two signs are in place at the main entrances of Stockton Heath, on London Road close to the swing bridge and opposite The London Bridge pub, to remember the achievements.

Stockton Heath parish and borough councillor Laurence Murphy said: "Purple Flags are usually awarded to cities and large towns with well-managed evening economies.

"Stockton Heath, with its vibrant night life, was the first village in the country to win a Purple Flag.

"We should always be proud of that unique achievement. Sadly, with savage cuts needed to its spending, WBC was unable to sustain officer support to the scheme.

"The application may not have been renewed this year but the Purple Flag will always fly in Stockton Heath's heart."

Stockton Heath Parish Council deputy chairman Stephen Taylor added: "We will carry on the ethos to promote the village as a nice place for all to come."

Money left over from SHPFA paved the way for the signs to be brought in.
