COUNCILLORS and PCSOs in Appleton remain determined to continue the battle against speeding motorists in the area.

A speed meter has returned to Longwood Road to help combat the problem, with drivers given a 'smile' or 'sad' face, depending on whether they adhere to the 30mph limit.

The meter has made its way through Appleton and Appleton Thorn in recent months following fears from residents.

Cllr Brian Axcell (LD – Appleton) admits there are concerns but is confident the issues will be addressed.

At the request of Cllr Axcell, Cllr Peter Walker (LD – Appleton) and Cllr Judith Wheeler (LD – Appleton) a senior highways engineer from the council has been conducting an assessment of speed limits in Appleton Thorn.

"He has been looking at Wrights Green, New Lane and Dingle Lane, which is extremely hazardous for pedestrians because of the width of the road and the blind bend – we expect the conclusions from this study soon," said Cllr Axcell.

"Borough and parish councillors have been concerned for some time about traffic speeds on a number of roads in Appleton.

"With some roads the speed limits are correct but they are regularly exceeded.

"Longwood Road, the B5356 through the village centre of Appleton Thorn, which is 30 mph and Quarry Lane south, which is 20 mph, come into this category."

The Appleton councillors believe the 40mph limit on Wrights Green, 60mph on New Lane and 30mph limit on Arley Road outside Appleton Thorn Primary School are 'too high'.
