A SURGE in car crime has been reported in Padgate and Woolston, with police urging residents to ensure cars are safe.

Cheshire Police says there has been a 'notable increase' in thefts from motor vehicles in the area over the last month.

Cars that have been targeted have often been left unlocked, or with valuables on display.

Sgt Neil Orford said: "Although several arrests have been made, we need your help to reduce this type of crime.

"I would encourage people to check their vehicles each night to ensure no items have been left on display and the vehicle is left secure overnight, when most of the incidents have taken place.

"It is important that this information is highlighted to your friends, family and neighbours so that we can work together to reduce, not just this, but crime in general, as it is likely that those responsible are committing other crimes too.

I would welcome information that anyone may have in relation to crime in the area and this can be reported at your local police station, via a PC/PCSO, via the mailbox, 101 or Crimestoppers.

"Equally, I would encourage people to report any suspicious activity, particularly during the early hours.

"This will afford us the opportunity to search people should the circumstances dictate, but also gain accurate descriptions of clothing and confirm individual details.

"I would be grateful if people would promote the use of Cheshire Alert and Twitter. They are useful tools and help to enhance the quality of life in your neighbourhood."
