A Thamesmead man has taken to YouTube to highlight the plight of abandoned trolleys in the area - including a song from his four-wheeled friends' point of view.

Trevor Nowell, aged 64, of Titmuss Avenue, has been rescuing Morrisons' shopping trolleys from the streets of Thamesmead for the past two years but now the resident's back yard has become overrun with them - forcing the YouTube whizz to make a video highlighting the problem.

Mr Nowell, uploaded the video, which shows the Morrisons car park bereft of trolleys set to the tune of Peter Seeger's folk hit Where Have All The Flower's Gone on September 4.

The four-minute long film also gives viewers the chance to sing-along with heart-wrenching lyrics - written from the point of view of the trolleys.

Lyrics include: "Where have all the trolleys gone, they have all gone away from the store. When will we ever go home to Morrisons. We are at Mill Court waiting to go home to work."

Mr Nowell, who runs the Thamesmead Pet Ambulance Service, said: "I've been collecting trolleys for a couple of years - it used to work well and Morrisons would come and pick them up when I phoned them but since certain members of staff left they haven't been for a month.

"I make videos to exercise my brain and it's worked in the past to get people's attention - we once couldn't get hold of our fuel man so I made a video and he got in touch."

Mr Nowell uploaded the video just days after 12-year-old Lee Bennett from Erith was injured when a trolley pushed from the overpass in Yarnton Way, Thamesmead hit him on the back.

He added: "They can cause accidents if someone pushes them into cars - I'm doing it in the interest of safety.

"That 12-year-old could have been paralysed, I'm not saying that was a Morrisons trolley but they can cause accidents when people are messing around with them."

A spokesman for Morrisons said: "As soon as we are notified that there are trolleys missing from the store we ensure that they are collected and returned as soon as possible."
