FORMER editor-in-chief and director of the Warrington Guardian Series, Trevor Buckley, died following a long illness at the weekend. He was 76.

Trevor was appointed as editor in September 1971 and in doing so proved that a youngster who began his journalistic career as an office boy at the Guardian could eventually rise to the top.

He served as editor until December 1983 and during his tenure was the driving force behind many innovations.

Trevor set up a "hotline" enabling him to field calls from readers.

Twenty two years before taking the top editorial position, Trevor had begun his working life at Northwich Guardian.

He was commissioned into the Staffordshire regiment and served in Korea. On his return to civilian life he worked for several magazines and provincial papers and also handled public relations for a number of companies before being appointed general manager and editor of a Staffordshire group of newspapers.

A keen sportsman in his younger days, he was a qualified Football Association referee, played squash and rugby and was also a champion sprinter. Trevor also found time to build his own house in Grappenhall.

After leaving the Guardian he set up Big Print, creating newspapers for the partially sighted and in retirement he and his wife, Kathleen, moved to St Annes.

Trevor is survived by Kathleen, sons, Paul and Christopher, and daughter, Claire.

His funeral takes place in Cumbria on Wednesday.
