WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones has demanded an inquiry into why one of Garry Newlove's teenage murderers was bailed hours before taking part in the gang attack.

Ms Jones has today announced that she will be writing to the Attorney General to establish why Adam Swellings, aged 19, was released from custody hours before carrying out the vicious beating of Garry Newlove that led to the father-of-three's death.

Yesterday, Swellings, of Meredith Street in Crewe, was convicted of murder alongside his other gang members Stephen Sorton, aged 17, of Honister Avenue in Orford, and 16-year-old Jordan Cunliffe, of Rowland Close, Cinnamon Brow.

After yesterday's verdicts it was revealed that Swellings had been released from custody for a previous assault just hours before Mr Newlove's attack and been freed on the condition that he stayed away from Warrington.

But Swellings never left the town and instead met up with Sorton and Cunliffe to begin their drink and drugs binge.

Ms Jones said she would be attempting to raise the matter in business questions today in Parliament.

So whats new? The offenders rights come before the victims rights and the protection of the general public. Goes on every day. To some extent the hands of the magistrates are tied - but they do have discretion! Unfortunately all of the jails are full and that is sometimes the overriding consideration. Will this change anything? Unlikely! Its happened before (remember the Algie's?) and it will happen again - thats why I resigned.

It seems swellings was known to all you good people of warrington...but not to us good people of meredith st, crewe. His family moved in over 18 months ago...and whilst they seemed rather rough and rude...he seemed quite polite.

How worrying it is to now find out he was a vicious, repeat offender...called hard faced by people who knew him at school and "some one who would never do any good" by his now ex friends (see other posts).

How worrying that he was moved out of warrington and yet contiued to travel back there with regularity to haunt and bully local people.

Why in gods name call him over to warrington to appear in court only to ban him from warrington...did the courts really think this kid would leave???? For crying out loud he lived in crewe but his record showed he was always in warrington causing mither.

He never mixed with any of the hoodies in our area...and there is a very vicious bunch of them. Nor did he hang out with the drug dealer who lived six doors away from him. It seems he was not man enough to hang out with them...god forbid he had or it could have been one of my neighbours dead now.

And on that point we at meredith street have been telling our local police, councillors (all to busy to attend meetings) etc that the gangs that are ruining our neighbour hood would eventually kill someone.

ARE YOU ALL HAPPY NOW...WE WERE RIGHT, THE WORST HAS HAPPENED AND YET ALL YOU MPS ETC WANT TO DO IS ASK FOR AN INQUIREY. Do you really need one to tell you what is plainly clear to all us hard working people who are prisioners in our homes thanks to these thugs???

Well let me spell it out again....

THE POLICE, COUNCILS, MPS, GOVERNMENT AND ALIKE ARE ALL FAILING US. THE MORAL FABRIC OF THE UK IS COLLAPSING AROUND US AND COMMUNITIES ACROSS OUR GREEN AND NOT SO PLEASANT LAND ARE HAVING TO BE CALLED HEROS JUST FOR TRYING TO STAND UP TO THUGS.

I appreciate that America is a lot more violent, the point I was trying to make is that firstly we do not do enough to prevent these crimes amd secondly we do not punish the criminals enough. These 3 REPEAT OFFENDERS who are well known to people of the area as the scum and scourge of society deserve to never have a life ever again.

This area has been plagued for years. Deeply ditressing and unfair that an innocent person had to be taken like this.

Hope these three scumbags rot in jail but knowing our judicial system they will be out and casuing havoc in no time. The rest of the gang need to be locked up and throw away the key. If this was the USA those 3 would be doing life and never get out and all those who were accessory severely punished too. They will get what is coming to them when they meet some people inside and they find out just how tough they really are.

"I am surprised there have not been more Gary Newlove type murders."

There have.

Including one very recently where the police completely ignored a gang stabbing a man, who was subsequently shot by the very individual who stabbed him.

Until the ridiculous state of affairs where the perpetrator's right to visit violence upon members of the community transcends the victim's right to a life free of violent attacks, there will b more.

There is a contract between the citizens of this country and the Government concerning protection. The Government protects the citizens from scum like Swellings so that the citizens do not have to protect themselves. Currently the Government is not fulfilling its part of that contract. The ramifications of that should be clear, even to the current administration, whose leader has actually admitted that incompetence is not a bar to holding the highest offices in the land.

I cannot understand why our council tax keeps going up whilst the levels of effective policing seem to be going down!

Time to bring back old values and respect for both the law, elders and society as a whole through stricter control of the sale of alchohol and the actions of youngsters.
More visible policing less the opportunity for tragic events like this.

Fearnhead has been suffering from out of the area marauding gangs of youths causing damage, drunk or otherwise, for at least the last 15 years. The police have generally turned a blind eye to it, just giving out incident numbers. As I have said before in these comments, if Gary had rung them on that fateful night regarding the damage to his property, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE RESPONDED. There is no getting away from this. The police were happy to keep the "drinkers" at the subways, or in the parks so at least they knew where they were, any collateral damage caused by them on their way from and to these places was hard luck. Things have improved since August 2007 and the damage is still happening but now at least the police respond.
But why should it take the death of an innocent man to make these changes which have been so blatantly obvious to anyone living around here?
