A FIERCE blaze ripped through an industrial plant in Widnes this morning.

Ten fire engines were called to tackle the fire as thick black smoke billowed from the recycling plant.

The alarm was raised at 1am when flames took hold at Waste Care recycling plant in Gorsey Lane.

Part of the building collapsed and Halton Council’s building control inspectors are assessing the damage.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “At its peak, thick black smoke was heading across residential areas.

“There was nothing in the smoke that could harm anyone but residents were advised to stay indoors with doors and windows closed.”

Gorsey Road, Johnsons Lane and Bennetts Lane are closed as emergency crews deal with the incident.
