JOSEPH Darlington, husband of the late Bessie Darlington, died of pneumonia following a heart attack and stroke on September 22, aged 90.

Mr Darlington, from Mosslands, and the Warrington area, was born and lived in Runcorn for many years.

He was employed at ICI Runcorn for 25 years.

During the Second World War he served with REME and had fought at Monte Cassino.

He had been president of Runcorn British Legion and president of the REME Association.

He was closely involved with work on the cenotaphs and the services held there, and had campaigned for several years to ensure that soldiers who had died in conflicts other than the two main World Wars had their names placed on the appropriate cenotaphs across the country.

Mr Darlington leaves his daughter.

A service was held on October 7 at St Michael’s Church, Runcorn, followed by cremation at Walton Lea.

His ashes are to be interred with his wife at Runcorn cemetery at a later date.
