THE Salvation Army in the town has set up a catering van in the town centre as part of its First World War commemoration week.

It stands outside its Academy Street building and offers anyone free hot drinks and doughnuts up until Friday, from 10am until 2pm each day, to re-enact the actions of the Salvation Army carried out 100 years ago.

Volunteers have devoted their time to help and doughnuts have been supplied by Asda.

Secretary Marjorie Samuel is hopeful the effort of bringing it all together can ensure people turn out in their numbers this week.

"This is what it is all about, we can hopefully bring the community together by putting this on," she said.

"We have put in the work through advertising to try to get the message out there and get people here and hopefully that will pay off.

"Troops were served doughnuts on the front line in the First World War and we should remember what took place during those times."

Liz Cotterill and Cathy Robinson, both from Asda, have also been present this week to offer their helping hand.

The charity will be holding a Festival of Remembrance on Sunday, in the presence of the Mayor of Warrington Clr Ted Finnegan.
