Soldier marries on day of departure

ON a Monday morning in August 1914, hours before his departure, Private Battersby and his soon to be wife decided to marry before his leave.

The couple got married early Monday morning, although they had originally planned to do so that coming Saturday.

Straight after the wedding, Pte Battersby and his wife left the Holy Trinity Church in Warrington to go to the train station where the couple said their goodbyes, along with the rest of the wedding procession.

Private returns home after four years in Captivity

A STORY of hope appeared in an issue of the Warrington Guardian in December 1918.

In the month after the end of the war Private Thomas Foden of the 2nd Lancashire Regiment arrived at his home of Pierpoint Street, Bewsey.

Pte Foden, who was in the Regular Army, had been held as a prisoner of war in Germany for four years and his return home was a remarkable occasion. On the event of his return home Pte Foden had completed 14 years of service.
