PERHAPS I’m getting lazy, but there are so many driver assist features in the Volvo V40 D2 R-Design, that I’m quite happy to sit back and let it take over.

To begin with, it’s a smooth and effortless drive with all the comforts and features that loyal Volvo drivers have come to expect. I am particularly fond of Park Assist Pilot, which automatically parallel-parks the car with no steering input needed from me, along with Adaptive Cruise Control, which maintains a constant distance from the vehicle in front.

This technology also forms the basis of several of Volvo's advanced driving and support systems, including Collision Warning, and Pedestrian Detection, with Full Auto Brake.

There is special emphasis on the steering to ensure that it provides an intuitive and linear feel between you and the road, making it very responsive and very precise.

The V40 is the smallest vehicle in the Volvo range and is squarely aimed at a younger audience. It’s also likely to be popular with company car drivers, due to its low running costs and low emissions, leading to good tax rates.

There is extensive storage space too, along with a refrigerated glovebox, thanks to cold air from the Electronic Climate Control system – great for keeping drinks cool.

The cabin is full of technology; all part of Volvo’s easy to use HMI (Human-Machine Interface). The infotainment system - combining audio, navigation, mobile phone and other functions - is on a colour screen and is set high to make it easier for you to keep your eyes on the road.

Bluetooth allows hands-free phone conversations and it goes without saying that DAB radio is included, although if you drive a lot in rural areas, you’ll get used to the signal disappearing.

As we all know, safety is Volvo’s middle name and this car comes as standard with City Safety and the world's first pedestrian airbag.

You can melt into the seats, which are sculpted to offer greater comfort and support. The rear seat is ideal for two people, although there is ample room for three, as long as they’re not six-footers.

And, if the scarily cold weather that hit America makes its way over here, it’d be a good idea to opt for the Winter Illumination Pack (£500) which includes active bending xenon lights, headlight cleaning, LED day running lights, heated front seats, heated front screen and rear reading, theatre and front door side step lights.
