It’s been more than 20 years since the Renault Clio was born and Nicole and Papa starred in a string of very successful TV adverts.

Throughout this time, almost 12 million Clios have been sold in more than 115 countries around the world.

It has collected an army of loyal fans over the years – and the latest model is guaranteed to meet with approval.

The fourth generation Clio is wider, longer and lower than its predecessor (but still lighter).

With its sleek, curvaceous design, it gives the impression of a three-door coupe, but all Clios now have five doors, with cleverly concealed, flush rear door handles.

There are three engine choices – two petrol and a diesel.

I drove the 89bhp, 1.5-litre DCi Dynamique – a very enjoyable and smooth drive. Steering was accurate and it was an excellent ride, with plenty of grip, and noise and vibration were well suppressed at speed.

The cheapest Clio in the range is the Expression, which costs £10,595.

Standard equipment includes front, side and curtain airbags, an impressive Bass Reflex speaker system, Bluetooth radio with USB port and jack socket, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and ETC (Electronic Traction Control), folding front passenger seat, Hill Start Assist and keyless entry and ignition.

A key safety measure in the Clio is the pressure sensor, which detects potential impacts.

Seatbelts are fitted with load limiters and, for those in the front, pretensioners.

The headrests have an anti-whiplash design, and the front and rear seats are shaped to prevent any ‘submarining’ movement in a crash.

There are quite a few well-thought-out stowage points throughout the cabin. At 300 litres, the boot is a fair size too, and the rear seats split and fold 60/40.

Customisation plays a big part in the new Clio, and you can specify the colour scheme of everything from the grille to the door pulls, as well as interior upholstery and a selection of accessory packs.

But it is the 83 miles to the gallon that appeals to me the most – less time at the pumps is always good, and no road tax to pay either, thanks to its low emissions.

Insurance groups are also budget-friendly, starting at just 7E.

Definitely my favourite Clio to date.
