If practicality is your middle name, the restyled Citroen Berlingo Multispace may well be the car for you.

It clearly wasn’t at the front of the queue when looks were given out.

Still, you can’t fail to be impressed by the vast amounts of space inside, along with better fuel economy, lower CO2 emissions and a very reasonable price tag.

There are four trim levels for the Berlingo Multispace and a choice of fuel efficient Euro 5 petrol and diesel engines.

All models provide very comfortable seating for up to five people and luggage space – and all VTR models can be optionally specified with the Family Pack to provide seven-seat capability.

Anyone with children – or a very narrow driveway – will particularly like the twin sliding doors, making getting in and out a lot easier.

The boot is huge, providing 675 litres of space with the rear seats in place and a massive 3,000 litres with them folded. And with extra storage under seats, in footwells, roof and dash, you really can pack everything but the kitchen sink.

However, you will need plenty of space behind you when parking in supermarket car parks or multi-storeys, to allow the boot to open fully.

Equipment includes radio/MP3 compatible CD player, split folding rear bench seat, multi-function on-board trip computer and rear tailgate.

I drove the VTR, which adds daytime LED running lights and colour coded side rubbing strips, bumpers, door handles and mirrors, as well as remote central locking and electric door mirrors.

It also has a height adjustable driver’s seat and front arm rests.

The Plus Special edition has extra features such as 16-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel, Aluminium Pack and Black Pack exterior trim detailing.

It is equipped with ABS with Emergency Braking Assistance (EBA) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).

In addition, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is either standard or optionally available, depending on the model, as is Hill Start Assist and Traction Control.

Three seats feature Isofix child-seat-mounting points as standard, with child locks as an option.

Air-conditioning is also an option, which is unusual these days, and an absolute must in our recent spell of surprisingly warm weather.

Although driving the Berlingo Multispace won’t set any pulses racing, overall the pros far outweigh the cons.
