If you’re lured by the prospect of a high-up driving position but are put off by big, chunky SUVs, the Suzuki Splash is likely to excite you.

It’s not often that you can call a car this size ‘practical’, but this mini MPV is a sensible choice for anyone wanting a spacious (yet small) car that is economical to run and easy to park, without losing its youthful appeal.

The Splash’s mini facelift includes a new bonnet and grille, and the front and rear bumpers have been re-designed.

Five models make up the range – the 1.0-litre is available in SZ2 and SZ3 trim; the 1.2 model in either SZ3 or SZ4 grades with optional automatic transmission on the SZ4.

The ride is firm, there’s plenty of grip and it really is a great little runaround. I loved the elevated seating position – once you’re used to being higher up, it’s hard to go back down!

The Splash is compact enough to manoeuvre with ease through narrow streets or to slot into tight parking spots. It seats five adults reasonably comfortably, providing a great view of the road at the same time. Fold down the 60:40 split rear seat and it opens up 573 litres of luggage space, including a handy waterproof compartment beneath the boot floor. There are also lots of cubbies and places to stash possessions dotted about the cabin.

All models have lots of standard equipment, including four airbags, a CD tuner with MP3 player and steering wheel-mounted audio controls, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, height-adjustable front seats, a tilt adjustable steering wheel and an information display. 1.0-litre SZ3 models upwards add air conditioning as standard.

Step up from SZ3 1.2-litre to SZ4 and the standard specification is even higher, with ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), curtain shield airbags, 15-inch alloys, front fog lamps, keyless entry and start and privacy glass for the rear side windows and tailgate.

Two Isofix child seat anchorage points are provided on the rear seats, so you can fit two children in – but whether you can fit in all the baggage they come with is another matter!

The Splash is offered in seven colours, of which five are metallic or pearlescent finishes, with bright red and superior white available as solid colours.
