THE New Balance headquarters in Birchwood has been recognised as one of the best workplaces in the north at the annual British Council for Offices (BCO) awards.

The American footwear firm's Appleton House building, on Birchwood Boulevard, picked up the title of 'Best Workplace Fit Out' at the prestigious ceremony at the Lowry Hotel, in Manchester.

Originally based in Boston, New Balance made the move to the town in 2014 to support its growing commercial success.

Judges praised the building for its creative and quirky interior fit comprised of bright decor and the use of reclaimed materials linked to the company's sustainability ethos, while the brand's history is also woven into furniture at the site.

The café, which can be used for meetings and socialising, was applauded for being a catalyst for improved interaction between staff.

"We have seen a range of outstanding projects this year, across all categories of the BCO north of England, north Wales and Northern Ireland awards," said Andrew Woodhouse, judging chairman.

"With this particular workplace, we were blown away by the creative thinking embedded in the design and fit out, serving the business well both as a new European base and an inspiring environment for employees to work in."

Richard Kauntze, chief executive of the BCO, added: "The entries for this year’s northern awards show not only the quality of projects in the north but also how workplaces are continuously evolving to add value to a business.

"Appleton House is a prime example of how a workplace can embody a brand and become an asset that inspires and engages a workforce."

All winners from the night will now compete at a national awards night on October 6.
