SMALL businesses need help with business rates if they are to continue to thrive.

That is the message from the CVS ahead of Small Business Saturday on December 6.

David Ford, regional performance director at CVS, said: “Small Business Saturday is fast approaching, and it’s good to remember the importance and value of the small business enterprise in Warrington.

"It’s also a time to reflect on the barriers that face small business owners, and how that impacts their longevity in the marketplace.

"Business rates are a critical issue, particularly in sectors which have taken a hit during the recession, and CVS believes that a better appeals process, more transparency and fairness is crucial for the survival of Warrington’s small business community.

"CVS has already proposed reforms to the current system that would support small business owners throughout the country, including an extension to small business rates relief.

"Currently, small business premises with a rateable value of up to £6,000 are eligible for 100 per cent relief from business rates.

"By extending this to premises with a rateable value of £12,000, the Government would lift another 400,000 businesses out of business rates altogether and give a major boost to UK high streets.”
