EIGHT new apprentices are getting ready to get to work in Warrington after securing jobs at Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT).

The new recruits will be working in the trust’s property services division, spending their time learning a trade. They will be involved in the day to day response repairs service, as well as some of the projects the trust carries out to improve tenants’ homes.

Roy Smith, chairman of the GGHT Board, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming these new staff to join us. Apprenticeships are a brilliant opportunity for young people to get their feet on the career ladder and hone their skills and trades.

"We have been elated with the success of our first apprentices and look forward to watching our new recruits develop.”

New apprentice, Nick Chambers, added: “I know I am very lucky to have been able to secure an apprenticeship with GGHT but at the same time I know I have worked incredibly hard to get this.

"I can’t wait to get started now.”

The apprentices, including four electricians, two roofers, one plumber and one plasterer, will have a three year contract and also pic up an NVQ qualification in their relevant trade through Warrington Collegiate.

Golden Gates bosses say they were 'over whelmed' after 150 people applied for the right positions.

A spokesman said: "GGHT are committed to giving the town’s younger residents and those who have been long-term unemployed the best possible opportunity to access all positions and apprenticeships with the trust.

"The unsuccessful applicants were invited to sign up for the Trust’s Positive Change initiative and take part in their newly established ‘1st steps to trade programme’.

"This offers candidates a range of courses for free, including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), Manual Handling, First Aid, Working at Heights and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).

"The programme also includes a two week work placement with Keepmoat’s Plumbing and Window fitting teams on GGHT properties."
