AN Orford apprentice has scooped a top prize at a national awards bash.

Tom Hughes, aged 22, was named apprentice of the year at the National Construction College (NCC) East Apprentice Awards 2014 earlier this month.

He won his award for completing his plant mechanic apprenticeship at Volvo’s Warrington depot.

He also won the prize for being the best apprentice on his course.

Following his award wins Tom said: “I’m absolutely delighted to get these awards, my apprenticeship has been a lot of hard work but it’s been worth it.

“I really enjoyed the fast paced nature of the work, moving on from one job to the next.

“I’ve learnt so much during the course but I’m eager to keep on learning and to get better all the time.

“Completing an apprenticeship at Volvo is a fantastic achievement and I’d like to thank everyone at CITB and the NCC for giving me this opportunity.

“My intention is stay on at Volvo and work my way through the ranks.”

The NCC awards are run annually to celebrate the achievements of apprentices.

Andy Walder, principal of the National Construction College, said: “We are passionate about what we do as a college and about recognising and celebrating success.

“Today is all about acclaiming those apprentices, such as Tom, who have achieved outstanding results and demonstrated real commitment in kick-starting their careers in construction.

“It is the achievement of these young people, along with the experience, knowledge and total commitment of our staff that make me incredibly proud to be principal of the NCC.”
