MEP condemns jail sentence for man who wore offensive T Shirt after murder of policewomen

Barry Thew Barry Thew

THE jailing of a man for wearing a T-shirt daubed with offensive comments referring to the murders of PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes has been condemned by a Warrington Euro MP.

Barry Thew, 39, was spotted in his home town of Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, wearing a T-shirt which carried handwritten comments of "One less pig; perfect justice" and "Killacopforfun.com haha".

Less than three-and-a-half hours earlier, Ms Hughes, 23, and Ms Bone, 32, were shot dead in a gun and grenade attack as they responded to a reported burglary on the Hattersley estate in Mottram, Greater Manchester.

Thew, of Wolsey Street, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court to the public order offence committed on September 18.

But North West Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies described his arrest and jailing as an “attack on free expression that weakened Britain’s moral authority in the world.”

He said: “How do we condemn Russia for imprisoning members of the ‘Pussy Riot’ group for offensive acts if we do the same here?

“If someone was to wear a T-shirt claiming that ‘Jimmy Savile was a nice man’ what is to stop them being arrested too?

“If we are to protect freedom in this country then we have to accept that even offensive idiots have the right to express their views. The fact that many people may be upset by them is not a sufficient justification.”

Following sentencing, Inspector Bryn Williams, of the Radcliffe Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "While officers on the ground were just learning of and trying to come to terms with the devastating news that two colleagues had been murdered, Thew thought nothing of going out in public with a T-shirt daubed with appalling handwritten comments.

"Thankfully the overwhelming response from the public - who have inundated us with messages of support and condolence - prove that  is the exception and not the rule and our communities were right behind us at our darkest hour.

"To mock or joke about the tragic events of that morning is morally reprehensible and Thew has rightly been convicted and sentenced for his actions."

But Nick Pickles, director of civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch, is in agreement with Mr Davies. He said: "The public shame of such a senseless and callous act is punishment enough.

"The idea that you should spend several months in prison for writing something on a T-shirt when shoplifters, burglars and a whole host of other offenders serve far less is absurd.

"Using the Public Order Act to police words is a chilling effect on freedom of speech and these powers have also been used to arrest Christian street preachers, critics of Scientology and even students making jokes.

"It's time we reform the law to protect freedom of speech and focus the police on bringing to justice those who seek to incite harm, not those who cause offence."

So will Mr Davies defend my right to stand outside his place of work wearing a T-shirt that says "Policticians are a bunch of overpaid d######ds". I am sure that it would be a very short length of time before he got the "justice system" to remove me. Anybody can say anything they want.......they just have to be willing to pay the price when its dished out. The guy was imprisoned for a public order offence. He would be the fisrt person to complain had somebody "taken exception" to him because of it.

God help us with politicians who think like this on the loose. One of the reasons our society is in serious decline is that standards have dropped and Mr Davies is obviously happy to support and allow this to continue. The police may not be perfect but we certainly need them and we should respect them particularly when two of their number have been so wantonly slain.

I am sure Mr Thew would be very pleased to see the police if one of his lowlife friends was about to kick his head in for the price of a fix. As for Mr Davies ,surely he should be supporting the police in this time of faltering law & order that is making so many of our towns into no go areas. He needs to be lobbying the government to introduce stiffer sentences to keep our streets safe. In fact ,given our present Health & Safety obsession i am surprised that police are even allowed out on the streets to tackle some of the idiots that are out there.

He pled guilty meaning he understood what he did was totally unacceptable, when will the Euro idiots stop trying to put the country down further into a country of lawlessness and disrespect? I know this clown was British but he's got the same idiotic attitudes of the rest of the clowns in the EU. Why doesn't he go to France about having such a tough policy on asylum seekers that they'll stay in camps in France trying to break into Britain because they know France won't give them a meal ticket if they claim it there? I think that's a bigger problem than someone with a criminal record bigger than the Oxford dictionary doing something yet again that 99% of the UK population thinks is totally unacceptable and deserves to do some more jail time specially while he was already on a suspended sentence!

With brain dead twerps like this in the European Parliament its time to pull the plug on europe. This excuse for a human being should be thrown in the cell with Barry Thew....

It seems that our democracy is divided between the UK Menbers of Parliament (on any side) who are sensible - and the European elected UK Members who get in "on asort of iffy vote" by who knows? and they are all uncontrollable with their views, not representing the UK at all.

All this sounds like the state getting more power, what next freedom of speech totally outlawed? It's going down the road to armed police I feel and the media will play its part.

The Police should be armed with changing times and a significant amount of ex red army weapons and ammo coming through with the Albainians. If 100s of full grown males can circumvent the UK Border Agency how many firearms which are a lot smaller than adult male's are also entering the country?
If we were armed crimes like what sparked this fool off would be more unlikely to happen. If having armed Police saved one innocent life a decade it's still worth it. Not on about changing firearms laws for the public either cause we don't want multiple massacres every year like America and their totally ridiculous reason that there'd be more massacres if the public couldn't be armed which really doesn't stand up that whenever the latest massacre happens there's not 1 member of the public who's taken the offender down before more innocent are killed. With the latest batman killings in Colarado that's one of the states that allows basically anyone who's not a convicted felon to carry a concealed firearm and i'd put money on it that somebody in the audience did have a pistol on them but like the majority of the population anywhere paniced and took no action and made sure that nobody told the media that there was somebody before the Police came that could fire back but didn't. Arm all Police units now with at least a tazer until full training has taken place. The PM and also Tony Blair have 24 hour armed Police body guards paid for by the tax payer. Can understand why the PM has this service but Blair is having a laugh he should have to pay a private company if he's that worried about his status cause of the illegal Iraq war. Granted members of the public don't need armed guards but if something bad did happen it shouldn't take 30+ minutes for an ARV to arrive which could be the difference between 0 deaths and 2 deaths specially with the way the UK is going where criminals have more rights the people with no criminal records and have never been in trouble with the Police

No wonder the country is in such a mess with morons like Chris Davies and Nick Pickles. Thews Facebook page is full of idiotic views about soldiers and police officers....bet he is an unemployed scrounger with a fridge full of ale and a pocket full of fags. He would soon expect the police to come running if someone was doing something to him. Scumbag.

RIP Fiona and Nicola

I feel pretty sure he would not ecpect you to go to prison for it, probably not call for your arrest either

What Thew did was stupid , offensive and I believe to be morally wrong.

However, four months in prison seems excessive.

Sticks and stones.... What the MEP is saying is this is a knee jerk reaction to an emotive incident. There are criminals aplenty out there getting less jail for more serious offences than causing offence to people who should know he's after a rise and thinks he's funny.
Notatcreamfields you talk plop, hardly any cops and their reps have said they want guns. Capital punishment yes but not guns as they fear all criminals will tool up if that were the case. Also you need to be careful with you critical political views being an alleged serving officer....

Whilst I do not agree with the views of this moron, the MEP is correct. We live in a society that not only allows but encourages free speech and expression ( and we are a better society for it). What people forget is that BECAUSE we have a RIGHT to free speech we have NO RIGHT to be offended by what other people say.
