A DECISION over whether rubbish can continue to be dumped at a Sankey Bridges tip is now not expected until the end of the year or possibly January 2013.

Plans regarding the future of Arpley landfill were submitted by Waste Recycling Group (WRG) in January this year.

Delays are being blamed on council officers wanting to be ‘thorough’ and an inability to find a venue suitable and large enough for the number of residents wanting to attend the development control meeting.

Clr Jean Carter (LAB -Great Sankey) has moved to reassure residents who are concerned about the delay.

She said: “I’ve had a lot of people coming to me, asking what’s going on and questioning whether planning officers have got something up their sleeve.

“There is nothing like that going on.

“It’s important officers get the report right and there’s a large number of expert witnesses commenting on the application.

“They are also still trying to find a big venue in the town to hold the meeting so as many people as possible can attend the meeting.”

The plans include extending the life of the site so waste can continue to be dumped until 2025.

Many residents living near the site have been campaigning against the plans and highlighted nuisance lorries, dirt, dust, litter and flies as some of their main concerns.

WRG has argued there is a need for the tip as others in the area will begin to close by 2013 and it has been working to ease concerns.
