Diamonds and dancing are forever for Fred and Margaret
11:30am Monday 8th October 2012 in News
A COUPLE who are still dancing after 60 years of marriage have celebrated their diamond wedding on the dance floor.
Fred and Margaret Atkinson were married on September 27, 1952 and celebrated with a party with family and friends at Alford Hall on Manchester Road.
They met while dancing at the former Co-operative Hall in Warrington and still take to the floor twice a week at least. They both decided it was a perfect way to mark their anniversary.
Married at the former St Ann’s Church, on Winwick Road, on a cold September day, they spent their honeymoon in Wales.
Margaret, aged 80, said her and Fred, aged 83, believe ‘pulling together’ has helped them achieve a happy marriage.
She added: “He is such a lovely man and really cares for me – he always has done and he still does because he treats me so well.
“We have always pulled together, it is something you have to do.”
The couple, from Orford, have five children, Julie, Gill, Jane, Ian and Cathy, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
All were at the party on Saturday, including granddaughter Amy and great granddaughter Chenin who travelledback from Italy for the occasion.
Margaret, who used to work at the tannery on Winwick Street, said: “Our children are brilliant with us.
“We are never on our own, there is always someone round to see us.”
