KETTLES were boiled and cakes were cut as groups, schools and churches held coffee mornings across the town to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Among them were Sankey Bridges Residents’ Association who surprised members after Anne Oates won a competition and had Sankey Bridges Community House, Old Liverpool Road, decked out like The Ritz Hotel.

Organisers said everyone enjoyed the day on what is thought to be the largest ‘World’s biggest coffee morning’ to date after raising nearly £500,000 for the charity.
