Rugby league stalwart Harry Jesson has died

ONE of Warrington’s amateur rugby league unsung heroes has died.

Former Crosfields player and British Amateur Rugby League Association life member Harry Jesson died on Monday, aged 78.

After hanging up his boots as a player as a result of injury, Harry got involved in the administration side of the game with the then Warrington Amateur Rugby League.

In 1973, following the formation of the British Amateur Rugby League Association, Harry became one of the founder members of BARLA Lancashire County ARL and was on that committee for 36 years until he stood down in 2009.

For his services to the game Harry was made a life member of BARLA.

A few months ago Harry was diagnosed with cancer and fought bravely against his condition until he died peacefully in St Rocco’s Hospice, Warrington, with his wife Anne and daughters Helen and Jane by his side.

BARLA chairman Spen Allison said: “I was saddened on hearing this news of the passing of Harry who I knew and spoke with for many years. He was a stalwart of BARLA Lancashire ARL and supporter of BARLA throughout.

“He will be missed by everyone. On behalf of myself, the BARLA Board of Management and the whole of the amateur game I would like to pass on my condolences to Harry’s wife Ann and her family.”

The funeral will take place at 10.20am on Friday, September 28, at Walton Lea Crematorium, Walton Lea Road, Walton, Warrington, WA4 6TB.
