Anger over membership fee offer at David Lloyd gym in Great Sankey

GYM members have hit out at David Lloyd claiming the company is mistreating existing users to exploit the closure of Total Fitness.

The David Lloyd gym in Cromwell Avenue, Great Sankey, has been offering former members of Total Fitness 12 months membership for £40 a month. It is usually £74.

However, existing members at David Lloyd were not offered the new rate, meaning they are paying nearly double to use the same facilities.

One member, who did not wish to be named, said: “We are upset because this means that we are paying almost 100 per cent more than former Total Fitness customers.

“And the offer only applies to ex-Total Fitness customers.

“If someone from David Lloyd left and subsequently rejoined some time later, they could not enjoy the same value.

“I feel that myself and a lot of other people from Warrington have been treated very unfairly.”

It is believed 400 people joined over four days for £40.

A spokesman for David Lloyd said: “We are very sorry to hear that David Lloyd Leisure’s recent offer has caused dissatisfaction among some Warrington members.

“Our offer was a genuine attempt to assist those Total Fitness members left without a place to exercise due to their club’s closure.

“However, we were made aware that some of our loyal members were unhappy and took the decision to withdraw it.”

David Lloyd has since upped the introductory offer to £60 a month, still £14 less than the standard rate.

What a rip off and total disgrimaniation towards existing members I would of understood up to 4 month at say 50% off then back to full payment.

So new members get a better deal than existing member. Since when have such offers been "new ideas". Everybody nows that organisations work on customer apathy and a lack of willingness to move. I cant see how existing members are being "ripped off" though as they are not paying more than they were happy with previously.

the people who pay £40.00 dont get full access its only gym and swim, trouble is the gym is empty the only people in are mostly total fitness so it wasnt being used anyway, and 40 quid is better than sod all,you can have it back in 12months because people from TF wont go up to 70 odd quid,

Does anyone know:
(1) How many of the new DL 400 members from TF got in at the £39.99 price? (Personally I'd be surprised if the majority didn't get the cheaper price as they'd be complaining too if they knew of this original offer!)
(2) How much was a child's DL membership for these former TF members?
(3) Was the TF £39.99 / £60 membership just for the basic DL package? What was the cost offered to them for full DL Raquets membership (I wondered if it was £60???? but perhaps I'm just too suspicious!)

Clarification would be interesting.
