Jail for alcoholic who attacked man on way home from night out

THE friend of a woman begging for money in the town centre attacked a man after he refused and called the group ‘smackheads’.

Warrington Crown Court heard on Friday how alcoholic Adrian Skrivanos, aged 43, was in Bridge Street with a group of people on April 28 this year.

Prosecuting, Paulinus Barnes described how victim Gary Chadwick was on his way home to Orford after a night out when the woman asked him for money.

There was a confrontation before Skrivanos, of Longford Street, Orford punched him in the side of the head.

CCTV played in court showed further punched thrown, leaving Mr Chadwick unconscious on the pavement.

He was later treated for cuts to his eyebrow, bridge of his nose and bruising to his ribs.

The incident meant Skrivanos breached a suspended sentence passed on 14 September last year after he stole £7,500 from a cafe’s safe.

Defending, Michael Davies said the group had been provoked when the begger was called a smackhead.

He added that Mr Chadwick had shoved Skrivanos, who has previous convictions for violence.

The defendant, who pleaded guilty to common assault, was jailed for 10 weeks by Judge David Hale.

He will also serve 16 weeks consecutively for the breach of a suspended sentence, meaning a total of 26 weeks.

At least the Judge made sure the sentences would be consecutive and not concurrently like a lot of Judges have been doing lately

"Defending, Michael Davies said the group had been provoked when the begger was called a smackhead. "

Did he keep a straight face as he tried to "justify" the defendants actions ? I know, lets pass the blame onto the victim, afterall he is the one who was probably the most clear headed and anti-confrontational in this whole episode.

Begging is actually a criminal offence in itself yet its not uncommon for the town centre parks and street to have groups of people begging so they can go and buy their next drinks (hmmmmm, thought it was also anti-licencing for licensed premises to serve people already under the influence). Just wondering how long before somebody is threatened by one of these groups, defends themselves and then face calls from the "PC brigade" for them to be locked up for "picking on the vulnerable".

There are many aspects of law-enforcement in so called "underdeveloped" countries that leave a sour taste in the mouth but I am beginning to like the idea of the police being equipped with long baboo canes and the authrority to use them to disperse such individuals.
