Council bosses apologise for Bridge Foot changes

The lane markings The lane markings

COUNCIL bosses have apologised for not giving advance notice of the controversial changes to Bridge Foot.

Work will be completed tonight, Tuesday, but a spokesman for Warrington Borough Council has warned drivers to take care with the new layout.

Drivers have been complaining about the changes, and numeours near misses have been reported by motorists on the island.

The spokesman said: “Work has recently been carried out to change the lane markings at Bridge Foot roundabout to help improve traffic flow which is part of an ongoing programme of works.

“Advance warning signs should have been in place by the contractor to advise motorists of the new markings, this did not happen and we apologise for any confusion and inconvenience caused.

"We are working on rectifying the situation as soon as possible and additional warning signs have now been installed on the relevant approaches to the roundabout.

“Remaining changes to the lane markings are due to be completed this evening and we will closely monitor the impact on traffic flow.

"We would advise motorists to take care while familiarising themselves with the new road layout.”

Then here is your chance to let us all know what the plans are for the ongoing programme of works.

I won't hold my breath.

One of the ongoing programme of works we can expect is for this to be changed back as soon as a none too humiliating amount of time has passed. This time next year I reckon

There was silly me thinking, when I read the headline 'that the appology was going to be for painting the lanes incorrectly the other night '. But that would to simple ..! WBC must think let's allow a few crashes and loads of problems to happen before doing a U turn on the innitial mistake .. I think the ongoing program should be released for all to see! Because maybe (although I doubt it) we could wrong for moaning about the changes..

Utter boneheads. It's a good job your not apologising for causing any fatal accidents with yet another highway cluster ****. Get the hell out of this council you incompetent morons.

It should never have occurred in the first place and a half decent organization would have made doubly sure it did not. But then as has been repeatedly shown WBC is not…..

Won't anyone in this Council stand up take responsibility for their actions instead of hiding behind what is fast becoming a corporate cloak of anonymity? Why is everyone running around pointing elsewhere and suggesting it is someone else's fault? Inefficiency runs through WBC like the name in a stick of rock.
Who engaged the contractors that just happened not to put in place warning signs? Was it a condition of the contract that warning signs had to be erected? If so who in the Council was on hand to make sure the signs were up before work started? I would have expected on H & S grounds alone, let alone Chapter 8 (Traffic Safety Measures and Signs for Road Works and Temporary Situations - published for the Department for Transport) requirements, those notices were mandatory.
As SickAndTired says it is high time someone had the cojones to deal with the over supply of incompetence which has blighted this borough for years.

"to help improve traffic flow"..Seriously? If anyone ever wants to go North on the A49 on that route they will usually go via Froghall Lane. Waste of tax payers money.
The most uncommon route at the junction now has the most entrances, while leaving 4 exits off bridgefoot to use a single lane. If anyone seen the traffic at 7.20 this morning you will realise how stupid the councils decision is on this one. Usually there is no traffic at that time because it moved somewhat smoother.

i completly agree with these comments.

but lets all agree Bridge foot has been a joke for many years and it has always been a disaster during peak times. but WBC seem to only make things worse.

this area is screaming out for a means to either bypass the area completley or a series of overpasses to sort it, both costing money no one want to spend.
we could always build a bridge over it and toll it like Halton BC are going to do,"only joking"

when we get the extra traffic in a few years you will need to take your sleeping bag with you when you go near to bridge foot

I like the comment "Advance warning signs should have been in place by the contractor" to advise motorists of the new markings.
How much money has been spent on these signs and their erection, paying more of our money into contractors pockets, lets see a print out of all the prices for this work. Bring back the firing squad to rid these people wasting our money, get these jobs done by our council workers, working for a none profit making organisation that we had years ago. Put the money in to warrington, not contractors pockets.

Well what a c*** up this idea was, do any of the muppets who made this change in warrington council even travel this route ? well I suggest they do now to see what further disruption they have made to the warrington traffic....not just at rush hour either...saturday afternoon the traffic was backed up to lever bro's island !!

Only a matter of time before some big accident happens, not to mention tempers lost !

Time for these peolpe to get of there rears from behind desks and see what carnage they are causing around warrington....well done...council tax well spent again !!

I just don’t understand the thinking of the new layout. Previously the single lane down Winmarleigh street filled up the three lanes buy the Gaurdian building which relieved the traffic when the lights changed.. Now everybody has just one lane to service the three other main routes out of Warrington. Probably 80% of the traffic goes around Bridgefoot not North on the A49.
The only solution :
Left lane – North A49
Middle lane – North and Latchford and Riverside Retail
Right Lane – Wilderspool & Chester Road.
I think it was like that before and worked (to a fashion !)
