Student inspired by 'life-changing' volunteer work

A STUDENT who travelled to South Africa for three months says her experiences in the country have been ‘life-changing’.

Emily Crocker, from Culcheth, coached football, organised tournaments and worked in a number of children’s homes, helping to raise awareness of HIV and Aids.

She said: “My three months in South Africa were some of the most interesting and rewarding of my life. “At the end, the children told me they didn’t want me to leave. From that moment, I knew the children had benefitted from my being there.”

And the 21-year-old is encouraging more people to volunteer.

She added: “This experience has helped me understand more about global poverty and how so little things can help a poor community. South Africa has also helped me to grow as a person and realise that no contribution is ever too small.”
