Summer 2012 was great - roll on 2013 - Guardian comment

SUNDAY saw the end of a remarkable summer of sport in the country. The Olympic and Paralympic stars of London 2012 have become familiar faces on our TV screens and for the millions lucky enough to have enjoyed the experience of heading to the capital to see the games in person.

But this week marked another moment in a fantastic summer of sport here in Warrington.

One of the heroes of London, Bradley Wiggins got back in the saddle and along with World champion Mark Cavendish, made his way through the streets of Culcheth, Glazebrook and Lymm on Monday.

Fans lined the streets to cheers of ‘Wiggo’, reminiscent of the Olympic torch’s arrival in town in May. Then 30,000 watched it snake its way through the town centre on a wet Thursday lunchtime.

And thousands more had gathered, earlier in May to watch the Queen open the Orford Park leisure centre – an attraction so popular that swimming has been sold out and membership inquiries have been soaring.

If that was not inspiring enough, 23,000 fans travelled to Wembley to see Wolves win a third Challenge Cup in four years with even more at the following day’s homecoming parade.

But it is not over yet. The Wolves could yet make a first appearance at Old Trafford and next year sees the town play host to the Rugby League World Cup.

2012 was a great summer of sport – could 2013 be even better?
