New screening exam at maternity ward New screening exam at maternity ward

BABIES born at Warrington Hospital will now have their newborn screening examination in a new clinic on the maternity ward.

Warrington Wolves player Lee Briers helped officially open the clinic which will provide a quiet and private environment for health checks for mothers who are not mobile, visit outside the clinic hours and have requested a six hour discharge on the labour ward.

Claire Evans, senior neonatal nurse practitioner, said: “Mothers will have the opportunity for an earlier discharge with their newborn as well as continuity of care by the specialist midwives trained to perform this very important examination.

“Mothers who choose a home birth can also bring their baby to the clinic to be examined through a scheduled appointment system.

“Any baby that presents with a problem or condition in the clinic can be quickly seen by a senior paediatrician and we also provide health education for parents as part of the examination which they find very helpful.”
