By day she cleans, by night she is Mayoress

SWAPPING her chains for a mop by day is the Mayoress of Warrington Julie Wright.

The 49-year-old, who cleans kitchens, corridors and the maternity ward, has been working at Warrington Hospital for eight years but has seen her role change slightly in the past few months.

Rather than heading home after her 1pm to 7pm weekday shifts as a ward assistant, her calendar is now packed with community events and functions.

The mum-of-five, from Latchford, said: “The people I work with have been brilliant and a big help including my ward manager Sue Benson.

“Most mornings I get up and do the beds and washing at home and then I come into work.

“If I have to go to an evening function my supervisor has given me permission to get picked up from the hospital and I have all the girls hanging out the window waiting to see the big car.”

The grandma-of-eight, who had previously worked as a childminder for 13 years, said she loves her role at the Lovely Lane hospital and after weeks of attending summer events at weekends she feels like she has got three jobs.

She added: “It can be tiring. If I get in and sit down I’m quickly asleep but I’m enjoying it and it’s a real privilege.

“You don’t realise what’s going on in the community until you do something like this. I used to be a person who goes home, cleans up and goes to bed and didn’t know about all the things that are going on.”

Julie, who has been married to Mayor Clr Steve Wright for 28 years, said the highlight of their new titles so far was the Warrington Wolves homecoming at the Town Hall last Sunday.

She added: “It was a fantastic day and I think the family realised how lucky they are that their mum and dad are doing this.”
