Environment Agency says it is taking action over dead fish

THE Environment Agency has said it is taking action after reports of more dead and distressed fish in the stretch of water which runs near Fiddler’s Ferry.

The Warrington Guardian reported three weeks ago angry residents had called for something to be done after hundreds of fish were found gasping for air in the water.

A lack of oxygen was blamed for the problem and the Environment Agency has now said it has been pumping it into the water to help the fish.

A spokesman added: “This had a positive impact and some fish responded well, however we have discontinued this process, as prolonged treatment will only exacerbate the situation.”

Team leader Carol Nadin added there was no indication of pollution and fisheries teams were working with the council over the possibility of moving the surviving fish from the marina up to the Sankey area of the canal and more long term solutions.
