TWO Army reservists from Great Sankey are playing a key role in security at the Olympic Games.

Sapper Mike Bannister and Sapper Iain Gregory, of 75 Engineer Regiment (Volunteers) at Peninsular Barracks, are working as part of the venue security team at Earls Court, where volleyball is taking place.

Spr Bannister, a 25-year-old pest control specialist, has been in the TA for 18 months.

He said: “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to get involved in the Olympics and I volunteered as soon as possible. It’s been a really interesting experience.

“We can watch the volleyball on our breaks and I’ve really been bitten by the sport.”

Spr Gregory, 20, said: “The public have been really friendly and there’s a lot of banter with people as they come through the security lanes.

“We’ve mixed with fans from across the world and they appreciate us being here to make sure they can enjoy the sport safely.”

Both soldiers went to Great Sankey High School.
