Memorial plaque to victims of IRA bombing in Warrington is back on Bridge Street

A PLAQUE put up to mark the Warrington bombings has been returned to the River of Life memorial on Bridge Street.

The plaque, which was damaged and stolen earlier in the year, has been recovered and returned.

It forms part of the River of Life which remembers the victims of the IRA bombings in 1993.

As reported previously in the Warrington Guardian, the two men responsible the damage and theft were dealt with through the police’s restorative justice scheme.

Clr Mike Hannon, deputy leader of the council, said “CCTV played a critical role in identifying the two men responsible and a heartfelt thank you goes to those staff who spent a considerable amount of time studying hours of footage.

“At the time of the theft, we received an overwhelming number of offers of support and donations from individuals and business and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their generosity and kindness.”

Clr Terry O’Neill, leader of the council, said: “The River of Life is such an important part of our heritage and we are delighted that the plaque has been returned to us. Warrington was shocked and disappointed when this happened and we believe that the restorative justice conference and the plaque being retuned to Bridge Street is the best outcome for everyone involved.”

Chief Superintendent Richard Strachan added: “It is really pleasing to see the River of Life plaque back on Bridge Street.

“Those responsible for taking the plaque have been through the restorative justice process, have been held to account for their actions and are now engaged in work to compensate the community.

“I hope this sends a strong message to anyone who thinks it is acceptable to damage or steal items that are an important part of our heritage that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable and positive action will be taken.”

im very happy that it is the original plaque and that there was no need to replace it with a new one

I agree with "old-codger" they should have been named and shamed - we have a right to know what sort of person we are living amongst.

I hope that the plaque has been refurbished while it's been off the wall, judging by the state it had been allowed to get into the council had as little respect for it as the thieves.

What's more sad is it took day's for the crime to be even discovered i believe it was someone from the Warrington Guardian offices that discovered the theft. This area of town is badly in need of regeneration instead of priority being placed at The Golden Square Shopping Centre. Maybe if the Council lowered business rate's on Bridge Street it could fill the empty non-productive units. Maybe if they'd done this it wouldn't have taken 4-5 days before the theft was actually discovered. R.I.P Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry hopefully in the near future the Council will turn Bridge Street back into a main Street for shopping and give the existing Town Centre Wardens powers to fine people that litter specially in the water feature that happens every weekend. If people realise if they drop litter they'll get a £30 fine if paid in 28 days or £60 if paid after. If the culprits claim they're on low wages or benefits it'll just stop them from dropping litter in the future and it won't take long before everyone will know that there's consequences to dropping litter on the floor or flicking cigarette but's because there's no excuse cause you're never further than 20 steps to a litter bin. Other towns fine people for littering so there's no reason why Warrington cannot do this also. Maybe with the revenue generated it could be put in a fund for regeneration of Bridge Street along with donations from business's and private individuals so the Council cannot be accused of profiting from fine's impossed on offenders

There are plans for Bridge Street. The buildings will be demolished to make way for a massive car park.

For every Richard Branson, I'll give you a million unemployable epsilon semi-morons getting by on benefits. The general point is that people with an education do better than those without.
