Silver lining for Thorn Cross at RHS Tatton Show in Knutsford

THERE was a silver lining for a garden design at this year’s RHS Tatton Show.

Katharine Willis, from Butler Landscapes, won the silver gilt medal at the Knutsford show for her garden created with the help of inmates from Thorn Cross Youth Offenders’ Institute.

She said: “A personal interest in the rehabilitation of prisoners, together with an awareness of the social and environmental benefits of garden design, prompted this colour-led garden that explores the rehabilitation of prisoners through wellbeing.

“The garden has been designed to address self-worth, stress management, social interaction, skill development, appreciation and acceptance.

“A strong structure of repeated circular forms creates a sense of unity.”

Meanwhile pupils from schools across Warrington competed in a variety of contests.

Students at Thelwall Infant School won a runner up prize for their Bagpuss-inspired creation in the School Front to Front contest. Meanwhile green-fingered pupils from Twiss Green Primary School in Culcheth entered a selection of vegetables grown in greenhouses or in raised beds in the school grounds.

Sarah Jameson, a parent at the school who organised the entry, said: “We are very proud of our display and all the hard work that all the children put in to achieve it.”
