Is Woolston woman town's oldest resident

COULD Irene Monks be the town’s oldest resident?

The mother-of-one celebrated her 105th birthday last week with her family at her home on Manchester Road.

Irene, who described receiving a telegram from The Queen on her 100th birthday as ‘very lovely’, became a widow in 1964 after her husband John died.

She had worked as a cotton weaver for 30 years while her husband was a labourer for Wire Works.

The life-long Warrington Wolves fan celebrated her 100th birthday in style as she was taken to a game at The Halliwell Jones Stadium in the Mayor and Mayoress’ limo and had lunch in the directors’ box.

But now Irene follows Warrington at home on her tv along with snooker, tennis and football and catching up on the soaps.

She said the secret to a long life is hard work and ‘contentment with her lot’.
