Call for new laws on dogs

A PET owner has called for laws to be brought in banning Staffordshire bull terriers from being in public without a muzzle after his two dogs were attacked on three occasions.

The latest incident left David Sawers’ westie with wounds behind his ears after the bull terrier ‘clamped’ his jaws around Mr Sawers’ dog’s head.

He added: “I have contacted Warrington South MP David Mowat and asked him to table a motion in Parliament that fighting dogs are muzzled when they are out in public and on a proper leash.”

His appeal follows a 42-year-old woman requiring nose reconstruction surgery after a Staffordshire bull terrier attack in April, as reported in last week’s Warrington Guardian.

My dog was attacked earlier this year by a Staffy off it's lead. I think its the careless owners who need muzzling tbh.

Is there not already a law that says these dogs must be muzzled when out in public?
Why is it not being implemented?

U can not blame the breed for attacks if it comes down to it all dogs shud be muzzled when out and about and not let of the lead un less in the dog section of some parks, and blame the dog owners when dog attacks as it's not Been brought up correctly dogs are like kids if they are not taught correctly then they turn out bad.

The writer owns a Westie.....A West Highland TERRIER. A catagory fo dogs which has the trait of being agressive and (for want of a better word) "snappy". Why not just make it ALL dogs in public should be muzzled. Forget this dangerous breeds argument (half of which cannot be enforced due to croos-breeds etc).

i think its an idea for all sorts of dogs to be muzzled but only if they have proven to possibly be a danger to the public on an individual case not all dogs.

but if it already the law for these types of dogs as cleo says then the police must enforce the law

Cleo is wrong. Staffies aren't listed under the dangerous dogs act therefore carry the same law as any dog in this category.

If she can provide evidence to back her claim I'll eat my hat.

This prat is off his rocker. You can't blame a whole breed on what one dog did! I have a staffy and he's good as gold and I can confirm that law or not, he will not be wearing a mussel in public because he doesn't need it and it's a waste of money.

Blame the deed not the breed, yet again this is just a total over reaction by people that do not have a clue!
its not the breed, its the way they are handled by irresponsible owners.
Whilst walking 1 of my 3 akitas and my 2 cavaliers tonight my akita was attacked by an off lead chocolate lab with out an owner insight.. my akita did not retaliate. know your dog and act accordingly if they are aggressive do not let them off a lead. be responsible.
