Warrington misses out on Portas money

WARRINGTON has missed out on Government money to help the town centre.

The town was one of dozens across the country to bid for the so-called 'Portas Pilot' cash to boost flagging town centres.

But it was not one of the 12 announced to win a share of £1.2million this morning.

The scheme is being headed by Mary Portas, the shopping guru.

A further 15 pilot areas will be announced later in the year.

Deputy leader Clr Mike Hannon said there was still much to loook forward to in town.

He added: “The work that we put into our Portas bid won’t go to waste as we had already pledged to deliver many of the planned improvements and quick wins for Warrington town centre.

"We’ve got a great team in Warrington who are committed to filling up empty shops, working together to put on new events and activities to entice more shoppers and visitors, and improving the environment to make our town a more pleasant place to be.”

we dont deserve any, WBC are not interested in the shops in town all the bull sh1t in the world wont convince me, they are only interested in what monies they cant get out of the shops, not if they can give them lower rates or help to keep going.

Same in the Market. Stalls are closing because they can't make enough money to cover the rents. Surely it would be better to have every stall open at lower rents then have the abject sight of empty stalls? It would also create a better impression and, maybe, entice more people in to shop.

But WBC don't listen to the public. so lower rents will never never happen.

If you work it out £1.4 million divided by 12 towns = just over £116.500 for each town.

By the time you take out planning and labour costs, there would be very little to show.

Its nothing but another Mary Portas publicity stunt!!

It was free money, so I dont blame WBC for going for it. It just seems that they view things like this as a funding source rather than a Brucey Bonus. You can just imagine the next meeting......"Oh we didnt get any of that Mary Portas money, did we win owt on the lottery? No? OK, any other ideas? No? OK, lets go home"

Totally agree widnesman, by the time this council spend a fortune on 'consultants' and paper exercises im sure there would be no more then £10 to spend on an actual project!!!

The council don't deserve a bean. It was their poor, short-sighted planning that's left Bridge St in the declining state it's in. Now we see their grand plans for redevelopment of Market Gate. They don't seem to realise, or more to the point care, that you need a thriving market first.

The market and town centre might be emptying, but look at Decathlon up Winwick Rd! And next to the new sparkly leisure centre! WBC doesn't seem to understand the relationship...
