LABOUR made five gains from the Liberal Democrats on a day of drama in the local elections.

Judith Guthrie, pictured, took Westbrook from the Lib Dems.

While Stockton Heath, Whittle Hall, Poulton North and Great Sankey all fell to Labour.

Wins in Appleton for former Mayor Brian Axcell and in Grappenhall and Thelwall for Ted Finnegan proved the only successes of the day.

Lib Dem leader Ian Marks said: "I'm disappointed but I realised this morning the Lib Dems had done badly all over the country and particularly the north west.

"We are in the mid-term and the Government is having to do some difficult things and people don't like it.

"I thought we would have got a little more luck.

"The lost councillors work very hard but it's on national evidence.
