Abdicate and admit the monarchy is a feudal hangover which, along with an unelected House of Lords, makes a mockery of the UK being called a democracy.

I believe we removed the divine right of the monarch to rule without question in the 17th century, so the monarch has little constitutional power. The House of Lords seems to work quite well as a check to the Commons. All that could happen if we elected the second chamber is that one party ends up with a majority in both chambers and has no real bar to its plans, no matter how extreme.

I personally think the queen is a great british symbol, but we should definately turn Buckingham Palace into a hotel/museum, think of the revenue we'd create when the yanks/japs heard about it! Old Queeny can just move to one of her (many) other residences. LONG LIVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN!

With a name like Cleopatra, I am not surprised you approve of imported dynasties - like the Saxe-Coburg Gothas and the Ptolemic pharoes

:-)

The lack of political influence and power of this feudal nonsense is one of many lies perpetuated by monarchists, as was demonstrated last year when it was revealed that Charles Windsor is given the right to veto legislation.

The situation you describe with an elected upper chamber is in no way inevitable - particuarly if elections are not held at the same time as for the lower chamber - and on a different basis.

You anti-royalists should get it into your heads that Her Gracious Majesty, at her coronation, was annointed queen for the rest of her entire life. Being a woman of some staunch character there is no way that Her Gracious Majesty will relinquish her duty by abdicating.

Mary Elizabeth Walsh, 18 year old daughter of a Lodon plumber, married George Carpenter of Herfforshire who took a liking to her when he hired the plumber to do some repair work for him. They Married, and from them descended Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who became Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
Bowes-Lyon is a Scottish/Irish/Engli
sh origin name. So we see that Her Gracious Majesty The Queen. rather than being an imported dynasty is in fact as english as you or I.

Give up now Liz.
Go and live in Norfolk and raise corgi's. You could make a decent living out of it.
Your children and their children could then go and earn some money.

It always makes me pee myself laughing when I hear ir read anti royalist remarks, These people have no idea the amount of money they bring into this country. They bring in some 60 x what they cost. Now thats an investment. If you dislike them so much emigrate, Russia would fit your mentality just nicely.

The tourism £ is a red herring , people come because of the history, or because they have some ancestral link with the UK, not because of who is living in Buck House. The lack of royalty does not stop people visiting the historic sites in, for example, Paris, Rome or Athens.

As for your second remark - this is my country and I shall carry on living here.Your remark has as much validity as if I said you should move to a monarchy such as Saudi Arabia or a nation with an herditary head of state such as North Korea.

I agree 100% with you Nick. My friends from overseas don't visit the Tower to see the crown jewels on the off chance Queenie will be cleaning them.
They come to see history and culture.
I'll repeat myself, the royal family should die out after the Queen herself dies.

Cleopatra says...

With what would you replace it?

Nick Tessla says...
5:11pm Tue 8 May 12

A little something called democracy. -An elected head of state and whose budget could be strictly controlled.

If they proved unworthy or just not up to the job they could be voted out after a four or fivde year term (try voting out a monarch who fails to live up to Lizzy's standards)

There would, of course, be nothing to stop Charlie Boy, or his sons standing.

We have a democracy. We elect our representatives. The Monarch has no real power, even the right to dissolve parliament went when the government passed the act setting 5 year terms between elections. The civil list is controlled, so all the fuss about reforming the Lords seems a waste of money. If it aint broke dont fix it.
