MAKE sure you check who is collecting your clothing donations to charity.
That is the warning from Warrington Borough Council’s public protection service and Cheshire Police who are working together to tackle illegal clothing collections.
It comes after the recent conviction of a rogue collector who was operating in Warrington.
Pete Astley, head of the council's public protection services, said: "The vast majority of these type of collections are legitimate but there is a minority who set out to exploit people's charitable nature and make themselves a lot of money. It is always important to check where your donation is going to and report any suspicions to us so we can crack down on these rogue collectors."
Sergeant Mark Spaven, of Warrington West neighbourhood policing unit, added: "We would urge the local community to remain vigilant and be on their guard against this type of crime. Unfortunately there are people out there who will lie to members of the local community for their own gain.
"In terms of this recent conviction, unsuspecting residents thought they were doing something worthwhile for a charity by giving their unwanted clothes but the reality was that they were being deceived and those responsible were making money out of their kindness."
