Padgate's Sue Johnston to grace the cobbles of Coronation Street

THE cobbles of Coronation Street will become home to Warrington's very own Sue Johnston.

The star, who was born in Padgate, will be swapping her crown as the matriarch of The Royle Family to take on the role of Gloria Price - the glamorous but terrifying mother of Rover's Return landlady Stella Price.

Coronation Street executive producer Phill Collinson announced the casting on This Morning today promising the role will be a 'really vivid, brilliant character'.

"She comes over from Spain, where she's been running a bar in Torremolinos, so she's a little bit perma-tanned and very glamorous.

"She's a terrifying, over-bearing, domineering mother, so there are going to be some real sparks flying."

Sue will start filming in a few weeks and her first scenes will air in June.

Sue had a small role in Corrie in the early 1980s before she went on to play Sheila Grant for eight years in Channel 4's Brookside.

Gloria will arrive unannounced on a brief visit - but it soon becomes clear that all is not what it seems.

And romance could be on the cards at the expense of Rita and Audrey as she sets her sights on Dennis Tanner and Lewis Archer.
