A centenarian received a telegram from the Queen, years after first meeting her when she picked up an award for her outstanding services to childcare.

Margaret Woodley, who celebrated her 100th on March 8, was born on a little volcanic island called Perim, at the southern end of the Red Sea.

Despite being born in such an isolated place, she progressed to have a career in childcare spanning almost 80 years, after graduating from Norland College.

Her first charges were the twin girls of the owner of Bentley motors, who made a birthday visit from France.

Linwood care home in Thames Ditton helped Margaret celebrate her birthday with a copy of This is Your Life.
