Station revamp earns award

WARRINGTON Central station helped First TransPennine Express win an award for station excellence.

It picked up the rail business award for the range of improvements brought in to the station.

More than £400,000 in funding from the National Station Improvement Programme as well as £300,000 from Warrington Borough Council saw the station get a new entrance and refurbished interior.

Category judge Peter Plisner said: “Competition was stiff but Warrington was chosen as the winner because it really does encompass everything that the station excellence award stands for: better access, more facilities and increased revenues.

“First TransPennine Express has also gone the extra mile with this scheme.

“The station appears to have been modernised very sympathetically. On too many project costs come first and Victorian splendour is lost, but not here.”

I take it they never ventured out onto the footpath outside? That's still not sorted.

True, but at least they are working on it. A whole section of footpath has been closed off for a while whilst it is relaid.

Thats more than can be said for the council maintained roads of Warrington :)

The wall next to the expressway has trees and plants growing out of the top. I assume the judges didnt get to see that.
