THE grandmother of a disabled MBE recipient says she will never shop in Warrington again after she was given a parking ticket.

Sylvia Lewis, aged 70, has been shopping in Warrington for more than 30 years but after being given the ticket earlier this month, she has vowed never to return.

Mrs Lewis, from Rainhill, St Helens, was in town on Sunday, January 8, with disabled granddaughter Michelle, aged 29, to spend her Christmas money – as they do every year.

But when she returned to her parking spot on Sankey Street from her shopping trip, she found her Mercedes had a parking ticket.

She said: “I could not believe it. I am so angry about it. I am a law-abiding person. It was a Sunday, there was nobody around and it was pouring with rain.

“All the shops around there were closed and the letter I received said the affected spot was only enforceable Monday to Saturday.

“They may have their £35 fine but they will have lost much more in business from me.

“We like shopping in Warrington, but we won’t come back now. We will go to Liverpool, St Helens or Widnes instead.”

Michelle is a former winner of the Pride of Britain award and was given the MBE for her fundraising which has seen her collect more than £2 million.

She suffers from the condition arthrogryphosis, which stunts the growth of muscles and tendons. She became the youngest person since the Second World War to be handed the honour.

David Boyer, assistant director for transport and engineering at Warrington Borough Council, said: “The notice was issued because the car in question was parked in a no loading area which was clearly marked and opposite the busy Legh Street junction which caused an obstruction to other road users.”
