GREAT Sankey is set to lose another of its four Ps after plans to move Great Sankey police station were proposed.

The crossroads between Liverpool Road, St Mary’s Road and Station Road were in the Guinness Book of Records as the only junction in the country to have four Ps on each corner – a post office, pub, police station and parish church.

But after the post office was closed in 2005 and replaced by a property shop, the famous crossroads are once again under threat.

Clr Roy Smith, chairman of Great Sankey Parish Council, said: “I know from talking to the police, the building is not that great and while it’s sad to lose another of the four Ps we have got to move on and have the best policing we can.”

The four Ps were historically thought to work well together at the centre of a village as residents could cash their wages at the post office, get drunk at the pub, get arrested at the police station and visit the church for forgiveness.

Paul Lynch, Chapel House pub landlord, said: “I’ll be sorry to see the police station go, they have been good neighbours and you don’t get as many kick-offs with a police station next door.”

The 52-year-old, who moved into the pub in 2005, added he thought the site would ‘always’ be a pub.

Chf spt Richard Strachan, northern area commander, said: “Following organisational changes and an increase in the number of staff working at the location, Great Sankey Police Station is now overcrowded with limited access and inadequate facilities.

“Consultation with Warrington Borough Council is continuing regarding alternative locations to house the Warrington west neighbourhood policing team within the Great Sankey/Penketh area including sharing accommodation with other public and community services.”

Mr Strachan added they were keen to hear any energy saving or carbon reduction suggestions from residents and that any plans would be available to the public once complete.
