WARRINGTON Borough Council has met with prospective developers for Peel Hall six times in the past eight months.

Town Hall bosses have spoken with officials from housing developer Satnam Millenium Ltd, which hopes to build on the green area, near Fearnhead.

Andy Farrall, executive director of the council, said there had been meetings on six occasions between November 2010 and July 2011.

However he said that no decisions on any development have been made.

Of the six meetings, three took place between November and February, and a further three between April and July.

The most recent meetings discussed residential development and featured members of the council, developers Satnam and Winwick Athletic Football Club.

They were revealed after a Freedom of Information request made by Warrington North MP Helen Jones.

She is now questioning why planning officers have not ruled out any proposal.

“Residents will rightly be asking why it takes six meetings for the council to say no,” she said.

“What will cause more concern is the council’s statement that no decision about building on Peel Hall has been made despite clear opposition.”

Poplars and Hulme Clr Brian Maher has already expressed opposition to any type of building work on the popular area of parkland.

He said the council has a legal obligation to meet with interested parties.

Peter Taylor, assistant director for development and public protection at the council, said: “Our policy since 2006 has been that the site is not currently appropriate for development.

“However the long term future of the site has to be reviewed as part of our strategic land use planning process. This has been subject to consultation since July 2010 and will ultimately be a decision of the council’s executive board and full council later this year or early 2012.”
