THEY call themselves the happy hookers.

But things are not quite as they seem as this group of friends find a novel way to ward off any stitches while taking part in the St Rocco’s Starlight Walk.

As if walking 13 miles in the dead of night was not already a challenge the four friends will make things even harder by crocheting their way along the route.

They have been meeting up since November over a bottle of wine and haved dubbed themselves The WI – The Witches Institute.

Ellen Hitchen, aged 31, said they were inspired by her friend to do something different to raise money for St Rocco’s Hospice. She said: “A friend of mine is doing the Manchester 10k Run hula hooping and I thought I could do something.

“I tried hooping but couldn’t do it and thought well we always meet up and crochet.”

The gang have been in training practising walking and crocheting at the same time.

“We have practised around the living room – we can do it,” said 27-year-old Rachel Guy.

Helena Eggleton, aged 30 added: “We have done tests on how to have the wool tucked under our arms.”

To help them, they have illuminated crochet hooks so they can see their needlework in the dark.

They are hoping to put their creations together to make a blanket, which they plan to auction off to help raise more money for St Rocco’s Hospice.
