JOHN Gartside's balanced comments in the GUARDIAN indicate why he would make a good MP. But I think you missed the point, which is that he is a real asset to the town and needed here in Warrington.

You may find it odd but I am not aware of having met him. Nevertheless, without his advice and support, my company - which now employs 19 people in proper jobs - would never have got off the ground 12 years ago. A rather belated thank you to him from my employees and me.

I can only go on reputation and what others tell me but it is clear that the town's economic health and sense of direction owe a lot to him. I am also told he is doing a lot for forgotten areas of the health service, such as mental health.

Doug Hoyle and his successor may be important. However, it is also vital to keep our best talent working for and in the town. Mr. Gartside is doing a terrific job locally. I hope he stays put.
